A 12-step program is a set of principles that assists people suffering from alcohol abuse and addiction by providing individual action steps.
In 1939, Alcoholics Anonymous published its original 12-step method of recovery from alcoholism in the book Alcoholics Anonymous: The Story of How More Than One Hundred Men Have Recovered from Alcoholism. Many programs have started as offshoots of the original Alcoholics Anonymous program. Likewise, these problems include drug addiction, compulsion, and depression.
In 12-step drug treatment programs, recovery is discussing the effects of addiction—physical, mental, and emotional—and responding with specific actions. Two unique features of the 12-step program are:
Some critics of 12-step drug treatment programs are leery of its emphasis on God. In the many decades since the beginning, Alcoholics Anonymous has adopted a spiritual focus. As a result, members of AA can define the higher power in their own way.
Could a 12-step program be right for you? The Palms Recovery hosts 12-step drug treatment programs for members of The Palms Recovery services work to fight the issues of addiction treatment by offering a complete range of detoxification, residential, and outpatient care. The Palms Recovery offers Partial hospitalization provides a structured treatment program as an alternative to inpatient substance abuse treatment. Each client receives personalized care while attending treatment each day. Treatment includes group and individual sessions with a primary therapist. Our multi-disciplinary team works with each client to help them develop their individualized treatment plan and reach their goals.
Day/Night addiction treatment for both drug and alcohol rehab is available for those who qualify. Treatment is six days per week for five hours per day. The program is individualized but typically lasts four weeks.
At The Palms Recovery, we believe that addiction is a family disease. Although one member of the family may be the one identified as the addict, we realize that everyone close to that individual is affected. Family members begin to change their own behaviors and act in ways that may enable their loved one’s substance use. Without help, the family may also begin to develop unhealthy thoughts and behavior patterns that affect their own lives in negative ways. By educating the family about addiction and codependency, our clients and their families are able to begin the healing and recovering process.
Through a variety of educational presentations and activities, Hazelden Betty Ford’s Family Program provides your whole family the opportunity to begin your own journey of recovery.
Recovery is stronger when all family members understand the nature of drug addiction and are involved in the healing process. By educating you about the disease of addiction and the different ways family members are affected—whether parent, child, spouse or partner—our programs and services help you:
Work through the chaos you’re experiencing
Set healthy boundaries
Rebuild trusting relationships
Improve communication with one another
Our Sober living offers a proven way to recover from addiction with a slow and gradual transition back into daily life at a pace each individual can learn to grow comfortable with.
The Palms Recovery’s goal is to provide comfortable, quality living in surroundings conducive to abstinence, recovery, and personal growth. We create and maintain a sober atmosphere that supports confidence, self-worth, and the motivation necessary for a healthy return to conventional living and mainstream society. Our sober living home is a great option to alleviate any concerns you may have about going from such a monitored environment right back into daily life. There are many benefits to staying in a sober-living home, including attending meetings at a 12 step program, creating structure, accountability, and creating a sober fellowship. A big part of staying in a sober living home is creating positive friendships that help to reinforce the desire to abstain from drugs and alcohol. This support system allows residents to avoid the isolation that can sometimes come with returning home while in recovery.
Residents aren’t bound to the sober living home’s campus and can come and go as they please. This allows individuals in recovery to feel like they are easing back into normal life and can start going back to their daily tasks and responsibilities. Although sober living homes are less restrictive than inpatient facilities, they still have rules that residents must abide by, including curfews and group meeting attendance.

Sober living homes provide a combination of freedom and structure to help the person begin to readjust to life outside of rehab. They are set up specially to serve as transitional housing for people coming out of treatment.
