Everyone has low periods, but depression is something different, and men often do not recognize it for what it is. It is the heaviness that does not lift, the sense that everything is gray and pointless, the exhaustion that sleep does not fix. It is losing interest in the things that used to matter, feeling disconnected from the people around you, and going through the motions of a life that no longer feels like yours. For a lot of men it does not even show up as sadness. It shows up as numbness, irritability, or just an empty flatness that will not go away.
Men are especially prone to missing or dismissing depression, to calling it stress, a rough patch, or just how life is now. Part of that is the old belief that a man should be able to tough his way through anything, including his own mind. But depression is not a mood you can muscle past, and it is not a character flaw. It is a real condition, a medical one, and it is treatable. If the heaviness has been with you for a long time, you do not have to keep carrying it as if it were just who you are. It is not, and it can change.
